I'm often asked about board games throughout history. Although dating back to ancient Egypt, I find those days instantly induce a snore fest. Yet the history of board games such as Monopoly, Scrabble, Candyland, Clue, and Yahtzee are really a kick.

Take for instance the famous real estate game. Did you know Monopoly was created in 1935 by Lizzie Phillips beneath the backdrop of the Great Depression and stock market crash of 1929? In spite of people losing their savings, 20,000 boxes of Monopoly games were sold in one week alone!

Jumping ahead to the 21st century, smack-dab in the middle of the Great Recession, Electronic Monopoly Banking Edition flaunts an upscale Times Square.

Thanks to Alfred Butt's state of unemployment in 1938, his spare time led him to create Criss Cross Words. Today the crossword game is known as Scrabble. Annual tournaments such as National Scrabble Championship are held in the US where players compete for cash prizes.

Since 1980, individual winners of the National Scrabble Championship have brought home $5,00 to $25,000. The total prize pools have ranged between $10,000 and $92,000. Scrabble games anyone?

Whodunnit! Oh yes, it's time to put on your best detective face! Clue, another board game stemming from the end of World War II, takes place in a luxurious English Manor which apparently survived Hitler's destruction.

Good thing... because I have always loved sneaking through the opulent rooms in search of the mysterious culprit!

Babyboomers know Yahtzee celebrated the end of a global war. First registered as The Yacht Life, this game of dice remains grouped with traditional board games.

As you might guess, Yahtzee was originally played during leisure time on a yacht. Can't you imagine the Millionaire and his Wife of Gilligan's Island drinking ice tea and rolling a Yahtzee? Times were good and Yahtzee reflected it!

The ideal diversion from the aftermath of World War II and polio outbreaks of 1945, today's preschoolers still choose the board game for Family Game Night. Do you remember racing through Candyland's gumdrops, peppermints and lollipops? I do! Yum!
